It’s okay not to know what to expect
One of the biggest worries people have is simply not knowing what will happen.
Therapy isn’t something most of us have experienced before, so it can feel a bit unfamiliar. You might find yourself wondering:
• Will I have to talk the whole time?
• Will I be asked lots of questions?
• What if I get emotional?
There isn’t a “right way” to do your first session.
You don’t need to prepare anything in advance, and you don’t need to have the perfect words. You’re can arrive exactly as you are - whether that’s nervous, quiet, overwhelmed, or unsure.
The first session is about getting to know each other
In my practice near Hemel Hempstead & Berkhamsted (and online), the first session is really about starting to get to know each other.
I will ask questions about what’s brought you to therapy and your background history, but there’s no pressure to go into anything too deep straight away.
You’re also getting a sense of whether I feel like the right fit for you.
That’s an important part of the process. Therapy works best when you feel comfortable and able to be yourself, so it’s okay to notice how the session feels for you.

You don’t have to have it all figured out
Something I hear a lot is: “What if I don’t know what to talk about?”
This comes up more often than you might think.
You might come with something very clear, or you might just have a general sense that something doesn’t feel right. Both are completely okay places to start.
Part of my role is to help gently guide things if you’re not sure where to begin. We can take it at your pace and figure things out together as we go.
A collaborative and down-to-earth approach
I work in a collaborative, relational way, which means we’re working together rather than me trying to “figure you out” from a distance.
Sessions tend to feel more like a grounded, human conversation than anything overly clinical or formal.
I might share reflections or gentle observations along the way, but always in a way that feels supportive and manageable.
You’re not being judged or assessed - you’re being met as a person.

Therapy can become more meaningful than you expect
Something I often notice is that therapy can become more meaningful than people expect over time.
It’s not about having all the answers straight away or making big changes overnight. But having a regular space where you can speak openly, feel heard, and begin to understand yourself a bit more can be really powerful.
For many people, it becomes a place where things start to shift - in how they relate to themselves, their emotions, and the people around them.
You don’t have to be completely sure about it. Sometimes it’s enough just to feel a bit curious about what might be possible.
A gentle next step
If you’re thinking about starting therapy in near Hemel Hempstead & Berkhamsted or online, it’s okay to take things one step at a time.
You don’t need to feel completely ready or certain.
If this has resonated with you, you’re very welcome to get in touch to ask any questions or arrange an initial session. We can go at a pace that feels comfortable for you.
